BAT MAN OF YORK COUNTY TO SPEAK AT THE WELLS RESERVE

On Thursday, August 28 at 7 pm, the Wells Reserve presents the "Bat Man of York County," whose alter ego is Tom Cowland, a retired schoolteacher with a long-time fascination with bats. A suggested $5 donation includes site admission. Reservations are not needed. For more information, call 207-646-1555 or visit www.wellsreserve.org.

Tom Cowland has worked with bats for four decades. He will talk about the bats of New England and the world, including insectivores, pollen eaters, fruit bats, and vampires. He will describe bat anatomy and physiology, feeding methods, and the myths surrounding these beneficial flying mammals. He will also offer tips on attracting bats to your backyard.

Tom Cowland was the biology and mammalogy lab assistant during his undergraduate years at the University of Maine at Farmington. After receiving his biology degree, Tom obtained a Masters of Science from the University of New Hampshire. He was the educational consultant for B.A.T.S. in Maine (Bats Are a Threatened Species) for nearly 20 years. He taught in the Marshwood school system from 1970 through 2004 and was the high school science department chair from 1989 until the year he retired.
